Cardamom flavoured black tea is one of the great aromatic loose leaf blends — a pairing rooted in centuries of tradition across South Asia and the Middle East, where green cardamom has long been considered the queen of spices. This spiced black tea brings together a smooth, full-bodied black tea base with the warm, sweet heat of ground green cardamom, producing a cup that is fragrant, elegant, and genuinely distinctive.
Green cardamom — Elettaria cardamomum — originates in the moist forests of the Western Ghats in southern India, where it has been cultivated for over two thousand years. It ranks among the world's most valuable spices, sitting alongside saffron and vanilla in terms of cost and complexity. Its essential oils give it a flavour that is sweet and floral, with a gentle warmth and a faint citrus note that sets it apart from every other spice. When blended with a structured black tea, those qualities are amplified rather than diluted. The black tea provides body and depth; the cardamom adds perfume, warmth, and that unmistakable sweet spice that lingers on the palate long after each sip.
The result is a cup with real character. The liquor pours deep amber, rising with a fragrant steam that carries the cardamom forward before a drop has even been taken. On the palate it is smooth and rounded, with the spice sitting in harmony with the tea rather than competing with it. The finish is clean and gently sweet — refined enough for slow afternoon drinking, comforting enough for an everyday ritual. This is a tea that pairs beautifully with sweet food: a slice of almond cake, a shortbread biscuit, or a square of dark chocolate all make excellent companions.
Since 2008, High Teas London has been one of the country's leading independent tea specialists, building a collection of over 350 teas and infusions — one of the largest in the country. Teas like this one sit at the heart of what we do: blends with genuine heritage, chosen for their quality and character.
Ingredients: Black tea, ground green cardamom.
Brewing Note: For the best cup, use freshly boiled water and allow it to cool for just a moment — around 95°C is ideal, as a full rolling boil can occasionally flatten the more delicate aromatic notes in the cardamom. Use one heaped teaspoon per cup and steep for three to four minutes. Cardamom black tea takes milk well, producing a creamy, lightly spiced cup that many people find reminiscent of a refined masala chai — though it is equally rewarding served plain, where the full floral warmth of the spice comes through more cleanly. For something different in warmer weather, this blend also makes a beautifully fragrant cold brew: simply steep in cold water for six to eight hours in the fridge and serve over ice.
