Tie Guan Yin is one of the most celebrated oolongs in China, and this Iron Buddha grade loose leaf tea brings together the powerful fragrance, balanced aroma, and refined character that have made it famous for centuries. Named for the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion — Guan Yin, the Iron Goddess of Mercy — this premium Chinese oolong tea from Anxi County in Fujian Province is a tea with deep roots and a long, distinguished history.
The story begins in the early eighteenth century, when a devout farmer in Anxi is said to have discovered a remarkable tea plant following a vision of Guan Yin herself. He cultivated it with care, and the tea it produced was unlike anything known before — the leaves were dark, lustrous, and heavy as iron, and the cup was extraordinary in its fragrance and depth. The emperor himself is said to have fallen under its spell when presented with the tea as a tribute gift. That same quality of tea is what Tie Guan Yin has represented ever since.
Grown in the mountainous terrain of Anxi, where cool mist, mineral-rich soil, and strong shifts in temperature between day and night concentrate flavour in the leaf, this oolong is processed through a complex and skilled sequence of steps. Mature leaves are picked at the Kai Mian stage, when the top bud has fully opened, then sun-withered and moved inside to continue withering. The leaves are shaken repeatedly — a highly skilled and intuition-driven step — before being rolled into their signature tightly compressed, semi-balled form. This rolling is what locks in the aroma and makes the leaf capable of yielding multiple infusions of distinct and evolving character.
Semi-oxidised, this tea sits between green and black in the cup. It has more body and roundness than a green tea, but a lighter, more graceful feel than a black — precisely the territory that makes a good oolong so rewarding. The lightly bruised edges of the leaf, visible after infusion as the ball slowly unfurls, are a mark of the traditional process that begins oxidation and builds that layered, expressive flavour.
This Iron Buddha grade is a premium expression of Tie Guan Yin — pure oolong with nothing added — allowing the natural character of the leaf to come through cleanly. Floral and softly orchid-like, with a silky mouthfeel, a gentle honeyed sweetness, and a finish that lingers long after the cup is empty.
Since 2008, High Teas London has been one of the country's leading independent tea specialists, with a collection of over 350 teas and infusions sourced from the world's finest gardens. A tea like this Iron Buddha Tie Guan Yin is exactly the kind of discovery that collection exists to share.
Ingredients: Oolong tea.
Brewing Note: Tie Guan Yin rewards patience and a little ritual. Before your first infusion, pour a small amount of hot water over the leaves, swirl gently and discard after a few seconds — this brief rinse softens the tightly rolled balls and lets the first proper steep come through cleanly and without any raw edge. Use water at around 90 to 95°C and steep for 2 to 3 minutes to begin with, adjusting to taste in subsequent brews. The leaves will give generously across multiple infusions — three to five is typical for a good Iron Buddha — each one shifting slightly in character as the leaf continues to open and evolve.
