🍵 The Blend — Hand-plucked Cornish tea leaves from the Tregothnan estate, combined with the finest Assam for the most genuinely, verifiably British cup you can pour

🍵 The Colour — Deep, bright amber in the cup — the kind of rich, full-strength colour that signals a proper brew before you have even taken a sip

🍵 The Character — Bold and malty with real body and warmth; Tregothnan's strongest blend, robust enough to stand up to milk and carry you through the morning

🍵 The Moment — Best served at breakfast or mid-morning when you want something honest, satisfying, and full of flavour — with milk, without, or sweetened to taste

Britain has been drinking tea for centuries, but until 1999 no tea had ever been grown on British soil. Tregothnan Great British loose leaf black tea changed all of that — and its story is as remarkable as its flavour. Grown on the Tregothnan estate in Cornwall, home to the only commercially grown tea in Britain, this bold, full-bodied blend pairs hand-plucked Cornish tea leaves with the finest Assam to produce a cup that is unmistakably and proudly British.

The Tregothnan estate has been in the same family since 1334, and its unique Cornish microclimate — seven miles inland from the coast, with acidic soil and a deep-sea creek that draws in regular fog from the River Fal — proves remarkably well-suited to growing Camellia sinensis. The first tea bushes were planted in 1999; today, over 26 miles of tea bushes thrive across the estate's grounds, making it the largest tea plantation in Europe.

The Great British blend is Tregothnan's boldest. The Cornish-grown leaves bring a character that is subtler and more nuanced than pure Assam — a gentle floral note, a certain quietness — while the Assam contributes the malt, depth, and full-bodied strength that makes this a deeply satisfying everyday loose leaf black tea. The blend was first created in connection with the UK government's GREAT initiative and presented at 10 Downing Street in 2012, honouring the idea that tea is as much a part of British identity as anything the country produces.

The result pours a deep, glowing amber and has the warm, honest character of a proper British breakfast tea — only with a provenance no other tea in the world can match.

Since 2008, High Teas London has been one of the country's leading independent tea specialists, curating one of the largest collections in the UK — over 350 teas and infusions from the world's finest gardens and estates. A tea with this much history and this much honest character belongs in that collection without question.

Ingredients: Cornish black tea (Tregothnan estate), Assam black tea.

Brewing Note: This is a bold, full-bodied tea that rewards a little restraint in the brewing. Use water that has just come off the boil and cooled for a moment — around 95°C is ideal — and steep for two to three minutes for a bright, lively cup, or up to four minutes if you prefer something richer and stronger. One heaped teaspoon per cup is a good starting measure; adjust to your taste from there. The blend takes milk very well, and a small amount of honey or sugar works equally nicely if you prefer a touch of sweetness. This is not a tea for multiple infusions — it is designed to give everything in a single, deeply satisfying brew.
