Full-bodied yet smooth, it is a proper breakfast tea with enough strength for milk and enough character to enjoy black when you want the estate flavour to speak more clearly.
Assam Thowra TGFOP Second Flush Loose Leaf Black Tea
Thowra Estate is one of Assam’s highly regarded gardens, producing a distinctive second flush TGFOP with wiry leaf, visible golden tips and the strong, malty character that makes fine Assam such a satisfying cup. Specialist tea retailers consistently describe this tea as robust, spicy, copper-coloured and especially well suited to morning drinking.
This is a tea with presence: bold enough for breakfast, polished enough to feel like a genuine single-estate selection rather than an everyday blend.
Deep Copper Liquor with Malt and Spice
In the cup, this Assam Thowra TGFOP second flush loose leaf black tea brews to a deep, glowing copper infusion with a warm, inviting malty aroma. The flavour is full-bodied and robust, with richly spiced depth, natural sweetness from the golden tips and a smooth finish that remains satisfying rather than coarse.
It is a classic Assam in the best sense: strong, hearty and deeply comforting, while still retaining enough nuance to reward attentive drinking.
TGFOP Second Flush Assam with Golden Tips
The TGFOP grade, Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, signals a carefully made orthodox leaf with a noticeable presence of golden tips. In this Thowra selection, those tips contribute both visual appeal and a more refined cup, softening the bold Assam body with a touch of natural sweetness.
The second flush harvest adds further richness and depth, helping create the malty, spicy character for which this tea is especially admired.

A Proper Breakfast Assam
Assam Thowra is an excellent choice for the first cup of the day. It has the strength to take milk exceptionally well and the structure to stand up to a little sugar or cream if preferred. Specialist sellers also position it as a notably good morning tea, with enough character to be enjoyed plain.
For those who enjoy estate Assams with real body and warmth, this is a very dependable favourite.
How to Brew Assam Thowra TGFOP
Use freshly boiled water at around 95°C to 100°C and add one heaped teaspoon per cup. Steep for 3 to 4 minutes for a brisk, lively cup, or extend towards 5 minutes if you prefer a deeper, stronger brew.
This tea takes milk beautifully. If drinking it black, keep the steep closer to 2½ to 3 minutes for a smoother cup with the malt and spice more clearly defined.

This tea has a good malty flavour. We drink it black, with a few drops of lime and with milk - it works all ways.
We have enjoyed Assam Thowra as our afternoon tea for several years. It has the perfect balance of flavour for this time of day, with huge capacity for extra cups when adding further water after the first pourings.
