🍵 The Tea — A Gunpowder green tea blended with two varieties of mint—spearmint and peppermint—inspired by the time-honoured ritual of Moroccan mint tea, crafted by the celebrated Parisian house Dammann Frères
🍵 The Cup — Clear and pale golden-green, with an immediate, vivid burst of mint that is refreshing and bright rather than sharp, underpinned by the clean, lightly vegetal character of the Gunpowder base
🍵 The Character — Bold and cooling, with the rounded sweetness of spearmint balanced by the brisk freshness of peppermint and a faint smoky depth from the tightly rolled Gunpowder leaves
🍵 The Occasion — Excellent mid-morning or after a meal; serve very hot with a little sugar in the Moroccan tradition, or take it straight for a cleaner, crisper finish
Moroccan mint tea is one of the world's most beloved tea rituals, and this Gunpowder green mint tea from Dammann Frères captures its spirit with characteristic French precision. The blend begins with Gunpowder green tea — one of the oldest and most widely enjoyed green teas in the world, its leaves tightly rolled into small pellets during production to lock in freshness and intensify flavour — before combining it with two distinct varieties of mint: the delicate, lightly sweet character of spearmint and the bolder, more cooling freshness of peppermint.
Gunpowder tea traces its origins to the Tang Dynasty in China's Zhejiang province, where leaves were rolled and carefully dried to preserve them on long trade journeys. That same resilience means the pellets retain their flavour with exceptional reliability — ideal for a sachet format. Dammann Frères, the prestigious Parisian tea house with roots stretching back to 1925, has perfected this approach with their Cristal® sachet, invented by the house in the 1980s. Its transparent mesh allows the rolled pellets to unfurl visibly during brewing, a reminder that even in sachet form, quality and craft are evident.
In the cup, the result is vivid and clean — pale golden-green in colour, with a bright, cooling mint note that is powerful without being medicinal. The spearmint contributes sweetness and a gentle roundness; the peppermint adds that immediate freshness. The Gunpowder base brings just enough body and a faint vegetal character to anchor the mint and give the blend real presence. Following Moroccan tradition, try it very hot with a small amount of sugar — it transforms the brew into something almost ceremonial, coaxing the spearmint's natural sweetness forward beautifully.
Since 2008, High Teas London has been one of the country's leading independent tea specialists, building a collection of over 350 teas and infusions — one of the largest in the country. We are delighted to include this Dammann Frères blend for those who want something genuinely refreshing and beautifully crafted in their cup.
Ingredients: Gunpowder green tea (Camellia sinensis), spearmint, peppermint leaves, natural mint flavour.
Brewing Note: Use water at around 85 to 90°C — bring the kettle to the boil and allow it to stand for a minute or two before pouring. Steep for 3 to 4 minutes; any longer risks drawing bitterness from the Gunpowder base, which benefits from a slightly gentler heat than black tea. The transparent Cristal® sachet lets you watch the pellets unfurl as the colour deepens to a clear golden-green — a useful guide to when the tea is ready. In the Moroccan tradition, serve very hot with a small amount of sugar, which softens the mint's edge and brings the sweetness of the spearmint forward. No milk is needed or recommended.
