Rooibos Citrus is a beautifully balanced caffeine-free herbal infusion from Dammann Frères, one of France's most respected and long-established tea houses. At the heart of this blend is South African rooibos — a shrub known in Afrikaans as "red bush" — grown exclusively in the Cederberg region of the Western Cape, a rugged, mountainous area where little else thrives. This Protected Designation of Origin ingredient is harvested, naturally fermented, and dried in the African sun, developing its characteristic deep russet colour and warm, slightly honeyed sweetness. Dammann Frères then layer the rooibos with orange peel, clementine, lemon, and a blend of citrus essential oils to create something genuinely bright and spirited.

The result is a cup that is both mild and lively — exactly as Dammann Frères intended. The rooibos provides a smooth, round base with the faintest woody depth, while the citrus notes bring a zesty, tangy freshness that lifts the whole blend. It is never sharp or jarring; instead, the lemon, clementine, and orange work in harmony to give a clean, sunlit character that makes this infusion as appealing served iced on a warm afternoon as it is hot on a winter evening. Because rooibos is naturally very low in tannins, there is no bitterness and no astringency — just an open, approachable cup that needs nothing added.

These sachets use Dammann Frères' signature Cristal® format — a transparent pyramid sachet that allows the blend to expand and infuse properly, giving results noticeably closer to a well-brewed loose leaf than a standard flat tea bag. The clear sachet also lets you appreciate the blend itself: the warm reddish rooibos, the pieces of citrus peel, and the small flower petals that give this infusion its characteristic brightness.

Ingredients: Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis), orange peel, essential oils (lime, clementine, blood orange), kola flavouring, flower petals.

Brewing Note: Rooibos takes well to a full rolling boil, so there is no need to let the water cool. Pour water at 100°C directly over the Cristal sachet and steep for 4 to 5 minutes — longer if you prefer a deeper, more intense citrus character. Because rooibos contains virtually no tannins, there is very little risk of bitterness even if you leave it a little longer. This infusion is equally good served over ice: brew it hot as above, allow to cool, then pour over a glass of ice cubes for a naturally sweet and refreshing cold drink. No milk is needed, though a small slice of fresh orange in the cup makes a pleasant addition.
