🍵 The Colour — A pale, luminous golden-green liquor with a clean, bright appearance and a fresh citrus fragrance that rises gently from the cup

🍵 The Character — Softly grassy and lightly floral, with the bright citrus lift of Calabrian bergamot and a smooth, lingering rose note that never overpowers

🍵 The Occasion — Beautifully suited to a calm morning brew or an elegant afternoon cup for those who prefer their Earl Grey lighter, fresher, and without milk

Green Earl Grey tea is a quieter, more refined take on one of Britain's most beloved blends — and when it is made with fine Chinese green tea, genuine oil of Calabrian bergamot, and the soft addition of rose petals, the result is something genuinely worth seeking out. This is a bergamot green tea with a clean, graceful character: lighter than a traditional black Earl Grey, naturally sweet in its finish, and unmistakably fragrant.

The history of Earl Grey stretches back to the 1830s, when the blend became associated with Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey and British Prime Minister of the time. Whether it arrived as a diplomatic gift, a clever solution to hard Northumberland water, or simply a happy moment of experimentation, the bergamot-scented formula captured the imagination of London society and never let go. The green tea version is a more recent development, but it follows a logical thread: by replacing the black tea base with Chinese green tea, the bergamot moves to the foreground, brighter and more expressive against a lighter canvas.

The Chinese green tea used here brings its characteristic freshness — a clean, lightly grassy quality with a smooth, well-rounded body that carries the bergamot without being overwhelmed by it. Oil of Calabrian bergamot, the gold standard for Earl Grey blending, adds its distinctive citrus fragrance: not sharp or soapy, but properly aromatic, with a brightness that feels uplifting rather than insistent. Rose petals contribute a subtle floral warmth and a gentle visual appeal to the leaf, making this an attractive tea to brew as well as to drink.

The cup pours a clear, pale golden-green. The aroma is citrus-forward and inviting, with a soft floral note that develops as the tea cools slightly. On the palate, the bergamot arrives first, fresh and clean, before the green tea brings its natural sweetness and the rose adds a gentle lift to the finish. This is a tea that rewards being taken slowly, without milk, perhaps with a slice of lemon or simply on its own.

Since 2008, High Teas London has been one of the country's leading independent tea specialists. With over 350 teas and infusions — one of the largest collections available anywhere in the UK — we have always believed that a well-chosen tea should be a genuine pleasure, not just a habit. This Green Earl Grey with Rose Petals is one of the more elegant entries in our collection, and we think it earns its place.

Ingredients: Chinese green tea, oil of Calabrian bergamot, rose petals.

Brewing Note: Green tea asks for a little more care than black, and this blend is no exception. Use water that has come off the boil and been allowed to cool for four to five minutes — around 75 to 80°C is ideal. Water that is too hot will bring bitterness to the green tea base and flatten the bergamot, so patience here is well rewarded. Steep for two to three minutes, keeping a close eye on the time; the bergamot fragrance will tell you when the cup is ready. This tea is best enjoyed without milk, which would mask the delicate citrus and floral notes. A small squeeze of lemon, or a half-teaspoon of honey, makes a pleasant addition if you prefer a touch of sweetness.

Love this tea

Delicate and refreshing tea, much lighter taste than black Earl Grey.

Awful

No rose petals in the tea. Just a bag of green tea, no Earl grey flavour. Very disappointing!

Green Earl Grey with Rose Petals

This is definitely one of my favourite teas. I lost smell and taste with Covid 18 months ago, and so a lot of tea lost its interest for me. This one has notes that I can actually taste, which has saved me from despair!

Use freshly boiled water (95–100°C) and steep 1 teaspoon of tea for 3–5 minutes, depending on your preferred strength. It pairs well with milk due to its malty character.
