Our Java loose leaf black tea from Santosa Estate is a smooth, distinctive single-estate BOPS with pale golden liquor, gentle malt and a naturally low-tannin finish. Grown in West Java and harvested during the peak of the season, it offers an approachable yet characterful cup with delicate floral sweetness — excellent enjoyed plain or lightly sweetened in the traditional Javanese style.

Java Loose Leaf Black Tea from Santosa Estate

Santosa Estate BOPS is a fine Indonesian black tea from West Java, offering a gentler, more elegant style than many stronger breakfast teas. It is a rewarding choice for drinkers who enjoy black tea with flavour and depth, but prefer a smoother cup with less astringency.

The BOPS grade, or Broken Orange Pekoe Special, gives a consistent infusion with good clarity and a satisfying release of flavour.

Smooth, Malty and Naturally Low in Tannin

In the cup, this Java loose leaf black tea brews to a pale, luminous liquor that is lighter in appearance than its flavour might suggest. The taste is softly malty, smooth and clean, with a subtle floral note that lingers gently on the finish.

Its low-tannin character makes it especially easy to drink, with a rounded profile that feels calm, balanced and quietly distinctive.

A Single-Estate Indonesian Black Tea with Real Character

Santosa is a tea that stands confidently on its own. Rather than serving merely as a blending component, it offers a clear sense of place and a refined flavour profile that rewards slower drinking.

It is less forceful than an Assam and less brisk than many Ceylons, but has a pleasing warmth and individuality that make it particularly appealing as an afternoon tea.

At a Glance

  • Origin: Santosa Estate, West Java, Indonesia
  • Tea type: Single-estate loose leaf black tea
  • Grade: BOPS
  • Liquor: Pale golden with clear brightness
  • Flavour: Smooth, gently malty, lightly floral

Ideal for a Softer Afternoon Black Tea

This is an excellent choice when you want a black tea with substance, but without the stronger tannic edge of a heavy breakfast blend. It is especially pleasing taken plain, where the delicate floral note and smooth finish are easiest to appreciate.

A small amount of sugar can also work well, echoing the traditional Javanese preference for a lightly sweetened black tea.

How to Brew Java Santosa Estate BOPS

Use freshly boiled water at 100°C and add one heaped teaspoon per cup. Steep for 3 to 4 minutes for a pale, balanced cup, or extend to 5 minutes if you prefer a little more depth.

Because this tea is naturally low in tannin, it remains smooth even with a slightly longer infusion. Milk may be added if desired, but it is not necessary and can soften some of the tea’s quieter subtleties.
