Our Smoky Assam loose leaf black tea from Hatibudi is a rare and distinctive Indian black tea with deep amber liquor, full Assam malt and a gently sweet woodsmoke finish. Crafted using the traditional Fu Soonga smoking method, it offers a softer, rounder smoky character than a classic Lapsang Souchong — warming, smooth and especially rewarding enjoyed without milk.
Smoky Assam Loose Leaf Black Tea from Hatibudi
Hatibudi Smoky TGFOP is a remarkable Assam black tea from the Golaghat district, created using an inventive adaptation of the traditional Assamese Fu Soonga method. Rather than relying on intense pine smoke, this tea develops its character through a gentler smoking process inspired by bamboo-fire cooking traditions.
The result is an Assam with familiar strength and malt, but with an added layer of mellow, woody warmth that makes it genuinely distinctive.
Rich Assam Malt with Soft Woodsmoke
In the cup, this Smoky Assam loose leaf black tea pours a deep dark amber with a smooth, full-bodied character. The Assam base brings satisfying maltiness and natural warmth, while the smoke appears gradually through the finish.
It is sweetly smoky rather than overpowering, with a comforting depth that feels rounded, balanced and highly drinkable.
TGFOP Leaf with a Rare Fu Soonga Character
The TGFOP grade gives the tea a quality orthodox leaf with enough structure and finesse to carry the smoking process without losing its Assam identity.
What makes Hatibudi especially interesting is the way the smoke complements the leaf rather than dominating it. This is not simply an Indian version of Lapsang Souchong; it is a smoky Assam with a style all of its own.

A Distinctive Tea for Curious Black Tea Drinkers
Hatibudi Smoky Assam is an excellent choice for those who enjoy bold black tea but want something less familiar than a classic breakfast blend. It suits quiet mornings, slower afternoons or any time a more warming, contemplative cup feels right.
Taken black, the balance between Assam malt and Fu Soonga smokiness comes through most clearly.
How to Brew Hatibudi Smoky Assam
Use freshly boiled water at 95°C to 100°C and add one heaped teaspoon per cup. Steep for 3 to 4 minutes for a smooth, aromatic cup.
A 5-minute brew will produce greater depth and strength, though the shorter range gives the best balance between malt and smoke.
This tea is best enjoyed without milk, but a small splash can be added if you prefer a softer finish.

I love smoky tea so Assam Hatibudi Smoky was just the ticket.
Smells very smokey but is much more subtle making a delicious tea; I make a blend with a Darjeeling
