🍵 The Blend — Hand-plucked Cornish-grown Tregothnan leaves united with the finest Assam from India, producing Britain's most distinctly homegrown black tea

🍵 The Cup — A deep, burnished amber brew — bold and full-bodied with the satisfying, honest strength of a proper builder's brew

🍵 The Character — Robustly malty with the natural warmth of Assam and an earthy Cornish backbone; assertive, rounded, and unapologetically British

🍵 The Occasion — The ideal morning cup that takes milk especially well; equally good throughout the day whenever a confident, no-nonsense brew is called for

There is only one estate in the United Kingdom that grows its own tea: Tregothnan in Cornwall, and this is their boldest, most full-bodied expression — a Cornish black tea sachet built for those who take their brew seriously. The Boscawen family, who have tended the estate since 1334, began cultivating Camellia sinensis there in 1999, drawing on more than two centuries of experience growing ornamental camellias in the estate's remarkable microclimate. That microclimate is defined by a deep sea water creek of the River Fal, running inland through the gardens and creating conditions of steady warmth and rising mist that closely resemble the foothills of the Himalayas. The first commercial harvest reached Fortnum & Mason in 2005, and the Great British Tea has since become the estate's strongest blend — hand-plucked Cornish leaves united with carefully selected Assam from India.

In the cup, it delivers exactly what the name promises. The Assam brings a strong malt backbone and a rich, warm depth, while the Cornish-grown leaves lend an earthy character that sets this apart from any other British black tea blend. Bold and assertive without a trace of bitterness, it produces a deep amber brew that takes milk particularly well — the kind of satisfying, honest cup that serious tea drinkers recognise immediately as a proper builder's brew.

This was the tea chosen for 10 Downing Street in 2012 as part of the government's GREAT campaign, dispatched to British embassies around the world to celebrate what this country does well. It comes in well-made sachets for consistent, precise brewing with no fuss — one sachet, one excellent cup.

Since 2008, High Teas London has been one of the country's leading independent tea specialists. With over 350 teas and infusions — one of the largest collections in the country — we take pride in stocking teas of genuine provenance. Few carry a story quite as remarkable as this one.

Ingredients: Cornish black tea (Tregothnan estate), Assam black tea.

Brewing Note: Use freshly boiled water — filtered if possible — and allow it to rest for no more than thirty seconds before pouring over the sachet. Steep for two to three minutes for a bold, balanced result, or extend to four minutes if you prefer your tea with real depth and muscle. This blend takes milk particularly well, softening the malty edge without diminishing any of the character. A little honey or sugar works equally well if you like a touch of sweetness. One sachet per cup — no measuring, no guesswork.

Use freshly boiled water (95–100°C) and steep 1 teaspoon of tea for 3–5 minutes, depending on your preferred strength. It pairs well with milk due to its malty character.
