Our White Peony loose leaf white tea Pai Mu Tan is a beautifully delicate Chinese white tea made from one silvery bud and two tender young leaves, spring-plucked in Fujian and gently withered with minimal intervention. Smooth, softly fruity and naturally sweet, it brews to a pale luminous cup with notes of melon, orchard blossom and a clean, elegant finish — a refined tea for slow mornings and quiet afternoons.

White Peony Loose Leaf White Tea from Fujian

Pai Mu Tan, also known as White Peony, is one of China’s most admired white teas. More expressive than the pure bud style of Silver Needle, yet still wonderfully gentle, it offers a graceful balance of delicacy, flavour and everyday drinkability.

The tea is made from a classic white tea pluck of one bud and two young leaves, giving it a beautifully natural appearance and a cup with subtle depth rather than simple lightness.

Delicate, Fruity and Naturally Sweet

In the cup, this White Peony loose leaf white tea brews to a pale golden-green liquor with luminous clarity and a soft floral aroma. The flavour is smooth and gently layered, with notes of fresh melon, orchard blossom and quiet natural sweetness.

There is no bitterness or harshness when brewed with care — just a calm, refined cup that feels elegant without becoming fragile.

Spring-Plucked Da Bai White Tea

The leaf comes from Da Bai white tea cultivars, prized for their fine silvery down and delicate flavour. After spring harvesting, the tea is naturally withered and slowly dried, preserving the soft grey-green leaves and the graceful character of the finished cup.

This minimal processing is central to the appeal of Pai Mu Tan, allowing the purity of the leaf to remain fully present.

A Calm and Considered Tea

White Peony is a tea to enjoy without milk or sugar. Its appeal lies in its quiet complexity and the way the flavour unfolds gradually rather than making a forceful first impression.

It suits slow mornings, peaceful afternoon breaks or any moment when a lighter, more contemplative tea feels right.

How to Brew Pai Mu Tan White Peony

Use water heated to around 80°C to 85°C and add one heaped teaspoon per cup. Steep for 3 to 4 minutes for the first infusion.

The leaves will comfortably give one or two further steepings, each slightly lighter and more delicate than the last. Brewing in a glass cup or teapot is especially rewarding, as the pale buds and leaves unfurl beautifully in the water.

Ingredients

White tea, Camellia sinensis.

Use freshly boiled water (95–100°C) and steep 1 teaspoon of tea for 3–5 minutes, depending on your preferred strength. It pairs well with milk due to its malty character.
