    What is Earl Grey Tea?

Earl Grey tea is a very popular choice, particularly in Britain, and is a black tea with hints of citrus. It is a versatile tea as it’s delicious served hot or cold and also goes extremely well with food. We believe this makes Earl Grey the perfect afternoon cuppa to sip on while enjoying a snack.

The Earl Grey blend, or "Earl Grey's Mixture", is assumed to be named after Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, British Prime Minister in the 1830s. He is famous for abolishing slavery but is equally well known for the tea named in his honour! Charles Grey reputedly received a gift of tea flavoured with bergamot oil as a result of his ending the monopoly held by the East India Company on trade between Britain and China. A "Grey's Tea" is known from the 1850s, but the first known published references to an "Earl Grey" tea are advertisements by Charlton & Co. of Jermyn Street in London in the 1880s.

    What is bergamot?

Bergamot is a small citrus tree and is a hybrid of sweet lime and bitter orange. It’s grown commercially in Calabria, Italy. The flavour is delightfully citrussy and possesses known health benefits due to the high presence of flavonoids. These are thought to help lower inflammation and aid digestion. So, drinking a warm, tasty cup of Earl Grey is doing you the world of good for your health!

Do you add milk to Earl Grey Tea?

Although Earl Greys were traditionally made from mild black China tea leaves and was not intended to be drunk with milk, Earl Grey can actually be enjoyed with milk. We stock a variety of loose-leaf Earl Grey teas which combine stronger leaves to pair wonderfully with a splash of milk or cream. These leaves include Ceylon and Yunnan. We recommend giving a variety of our Earl Grey teas a whirl to discover which combination you prefer.

Try our ever-popular Earl Grey Reserve with beautiful blue cornflowers for a superb quality tea. This is the ideal choice if you fancy a classic Ceylon tea as it has hints of floral mixed with citrus. Or for the right royal cuppa, why not sample our Smoky Earl Grey? This combines the smoky Lapsang Souchong leaves and bergamot. It is also reputed to be the favoured tea of the late HRH Queen Elizabeth!

In addition to black Earl Greys, we also have White Earl Greys, Sencha Earl Greys, and Rooibos Earl Greys. We even offer organic and tea bag versions available for you to try out. Browse our quality selection of Earl Grey teas here.
