INDONESIA TEAS
Indonesia loose leaf tea may be less familiar than the country's famous coffee, but the tropical island of Java produces black teas of real elegance and character. Our collection centres on Java Santosa Estate — a light, malty and gently floral black tea that offers a very good introduction to one of the world's most overlooked tea origins.
Java as a Tea Origin
Indonesia is one of the world's largest tea producers, yet its teas rarely receive the attention they deserve. The tropical island of Java has conditions well suited to growing tea — warm temperatures, high humidity and rich volcanic soils — and the estate teas produced here have a character that stands apart from more familiar origins. Indonesian black teas from Java tend to be lighter and more floral than the robust teas of Assam, with a clarity and drinkability that places them closer in style to a fine Ceylon, while still offering a character distinctly their own.
Java Santosa Estate
Java Santosa Estate is the only tea we have at the moment. It's an excellent example of what Java can produce. Its character is malty and gently floral — there is enough body to feel satisfying and enough freshness to remain approachable, without ever becoming heavy or demanding. The slightly floral finish sets it apart from more everyday black teas, and that combination of ease and refinement is what makes it such a good introduction to Indonesian tea for those who have not explored the origin before.
Brewing Indonesia Tea
Java Santosa Estate is versatile and forgiving to brew. Use freshly boiled water and steep for three to four minutes — a little less for a lighter cup, a little more for more body. Drunk black, its floral side comes forward more clearly and the lighter, more elegant aspects of the tea are easier to appreciate. With milk, the malty character rounds out and becomes warmer and more comforting. Both approaches work well, making this a tea that suits different moods and moments without demanding any particular attention.
Indonesia is rarely the first origin that comes to mind for tea lovers, but Java Santosa Estate is a good reminder that some of the most enjoyable teas come from places not yet on everyone's radar. If you enjoy Ceylon teas or simply want to explore a less familiar corner of the tea world, this is a very good place to start.
