🍵 The Leaf — A special selection of darker Pekoe leaves from the Saint James Estate in Sri Lanka's famous Malwatta Valley, chosen for their depth, body, and richly aromatic character
🍵 The Colour — Brews to a bright red-golden cup, slightly deeper than many high-grown Uva teas, with a striking clarity and a strongly scented, lingering bouquet
🍵 The Character — Full and spicy on the palate, with a smooth, balanced finish and a distinctive aromatic quality that sets Uva teas apart from any other Ceylon
🍵 The Morning Cup — The estate manager's preferred breakfast drink — robust and satisfying, it takes milk beautifully and holds up to the start of even the busiest day
The Saint James Estate in Sri Lanka's Malwatta Valley has been producing prime quality teas for well over a century, and this Uva Pekoe is one of its most characterful. A special selection of darker Pekoe leaves, chosen for their body and aromatic depth, it brews to a bright red-golden cup that is noticeably richer in colour than many Uva highland teas — a quality that signals straight away that this is a Ceylon black tea with real presence.
The Uva region sits on the eastern slopes of the Sri Lankan highlands, between roughly four and six thousand feet above sea level. It is a landscape shaped by warm days, cold nights, and the seasonal Cachan winds that blow in from the Bay of Bengal — a climatic combination that concentrates the flavour within the leaf and gives Uva teas their characteristic spice and aromatic intensity. The Malwatta Valley, whose name translates simply as Flower Garden Valley, sits at the heart of this district and is home to several estates of exceptional reputation. Saint James is among the finest of them, now part of Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC and holder of the Rainforest Alliance Certification, reflecting its commitment to sustainable and ethical practices.
What you find in the cup is a full, spicy, beautifully balanced loose leaf black tea with a strongly scented bouquet and a smooth, rounded finish. It is firm enough to take milk without losing any of its character, yet sufficiently well balanced that those who prefer it black will find it equally rewarding. This is the estate manager's own preferred morning drink, and it is easy to understand why — there is depth here, and warmth, and the kind of quiet dependability that makes a good breakfast tea genuinely irreplaceable.
Since 2008, High Teas London has been one of the country's leading independent tea specialists. With over 350 teas and infusions — one of the largest collections in the country — we have spent years sourcing teas of exactly this quality: estate-grown, distinctive, and consistently excellent. This Uva Pekoe is a very good example of why single-estate Ceylon tea continues to earn its devoted following.
Ingredients: Black tea.
Brewing Note: Use one generous teaspoon of leaf per cup and water that has just reached a full boil — Uva Pekoe is robust enough to welcome it. Steep for three to four minutes for a bright, lively cup, or allow four to five minutes if you prefer a deeper, fuller brew. It takes milk well and holds its flavour against a splash of cold water if you like your tea slightly cooled. For the best results, use a warmed pot and pour immediately — this tea is at its finest when drunk fresh rather than left to stand.

One has to get the brewing time just so with this one. For me 2.30 to 3 minutes is optimal. Once achieved, a nice balance of fragrance, body and astringency
This was a surprise, one I should have sampled first, before buying 500 gms! Very strong, so packs a real flavour punch and saves you money at the same time. But also very high in tannin, so must NOT be left to brew for more than five minutes, lest it becomes positively medicinal (Tea Tree/Dettol comes to mind). Treated properly, a good, flavoursome, energising start to the day.
It is just for us the Dubliners Breakfast is such a nutty winner. This is good though …. just not quite my “cup of tea"
Full bodied and rounded.
This tea is delicious. I tried a different Ceylon when it was out of stock but went right back to this one when it was restocked. It's a strong brew so I would say to go easy until you know it better-it tends to get a little bitter if you use too much but get it right and it's a great, refreshing brew
