For anyone who loves the elegance of traditional Earl Grey but prefers to avoid caffeine, this is a genuinely satisfying alternative rather than a compromise.

Rooibos, or redbush, grows exclusively in the Cederberg Mountains of South Africa's Western Cape, where the fynbos shrubland produces a plant unlike anything else in the world. Free from caffeine and tannins, it brews to a deep, warming amber with a naturally mellow, slightly sweet character and none of the bitterness associated with conventional tea. Paired with bergamot — a fragrant citrus fruit cultivated principally along the Calabrian coast of southern Italy — the familiar Earl Grey profile takes shape with real conviction.

Brewing Note: Rooibos takes fully boiling water with ease — no need to let the kettle cool. Pour water at 100°C directly over the leaves and allow them to steep for 6 to 8 minutes, which gives the rooibos time to fully open and release its natural sweetness alongside the bergamot. A longer steep will deepen the colour and body without any risk of bitterness, so do not be afraid to leave it a little longer if you prefer more intensity. Earl Grey Rooibos works beautifully black, and also takes a small splash of milk well, which softens the bergamot note slightly and rounds out the cup. For something different in warmer months, try cold brewing overnight in the fridge — add a generous measure of leaves to cold water and leave for 8 to 12 hours for a smooth, refreshing iced infusion.
