🍵 The Estate — A single-estate organic FTGFOP1 black tea from the small Tonganagaon garden in the eastern Assam valley, grown alongside the edge of the Namdapha natural reserve
🍵 The Liquor — A warm, copper-bright infusion, full-bodied but smooth, with a naturally clean finish that takes milk beautifully or stands confidently on its own
🍵 The Character — Silky and refined, with a gently spiced, aromatic bouquet, malty depth, and subtle toasty notes that give it a more nuanced quality than many Assams
🍵 The Occasion — An unhurried morning cup or a calm mid-afternoon brew, well-suited to those who want an organic Assam with genuine character and poise
The Tonganagaon estate sits in the eastern Assam valley, close to the edge of the Namdapha natural reserve — one of the most biodiverse areas in the whole of India. It is a small plantation, carefully run, and the FTGFOP1 grade it produces tells you something important before you even open the packet. Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe: the golden tips in the leaf signal careful selection and a fastidious approach to quality at every stage of production.
Organic farming has been central to Tonganagaon's identity for some years now. The estate operates entirely without synthetic fertilisers, herbicides, or pesticides — a commitment that protects the surrounding ecosystem and the integrity of what ends up in your cup. Processing follows the orthodox method: leaves are withered, then rolled and fully oxidised before being heat-dried to fix the character of the leaf. This considered approach is what gives Tonganagaon its distinctly smooth, refined profile rather than the blunter weight more common in commercial Assam production.
In the cup, this tea earns its reputation. The infusion glows a warm copper, full-bodied but never heavy, with a silkily rounded mouthfeel and a gently spiced, aromatic bouquet. The malt is there — this is unmistakably an Assam — but it is balanced and well-mannered, lifted by faint toasty notes and a clean, lingering finish. It is equally at home taken black or with a dash of whole milk, each approach bringing out a slightly different quality in the leaf.
Since 2008, High Teas London has been one of the country's leading independent tea specialists, building one of the largest collections available anywhere — over 350 teas and infusions from the world's finest gardens. Tonganagaon is precisely the kind of single-estate organic tea this collection was built to champion.
Ingredients: Organic Assam black tea (Camellia sinensis).
Brewing Note: Tonganagaon responds well to a little attention at the kettle. Use freshly drawn water at 95 to 100°C — this is a fully oxidised black tea and benefits from good heat to open the leaf properly. A heaped teaspoon per cup is the right starting point; steep for three to four minutes for a smooth, rounded result, or extend to five if you prefer more depth and body. Where possible, use filtered water — the clarity and quality of Assam at this grade is noticeably better for it. Excellent with a splash of whole milk, but worth trying black first to appreciate the spiced aroma and the clean finish the golden-tipped leaf delivers.
